Crypt of Drath:

The tip of Demonslayer has been taken by the Lich Drath and brought to his crypt. His crypt is in the Cavern of Spirits. You can get there by boat, after going through the Waterfall Warren. To get anywhere, you will need the Stone Key, which Motrax tells you about. To get the key go east from Motrax's cave and find an eerie cave where there was once a battle. The key is in there.

You will also find your progress blocked by a pit trap. Now to get over the pit. If you fall in, you can get back up to the South, but you can't open the gates you need to open. There is a secret passage past the trap. Fight your way to the stairs. Go down the stairs and turn the wheel, which will open the gates. Go to the dock to the South. You will find a set of stairs blocked by two gates. You will need to turn two wheels to open them. The first is hidden to the West. The second is to the Northwest, in the demon labratory, off of one of the cells.

Once the gates are open, you can enter the third floor. Head East through the secret passage until you reach a teleporter. You are now faced with three teleporters. One brings up several undead. After fighting them three times, you should find yourself in another room. There is a secret passage that leads to Drath. After fighting him, there is treasure to the North and his crypt to the South. The tip is in his crypt, as is the teleporter out.

The New Factory:

To get through the New Factory quickly, go south to the secret passage at (10,17). Go through and make your way to another secret passage at (6,19). Pass through the secret passage at (6,44) and press the button located at (4,44). You will be teleported to the exit.

A handy-dandy tourists' guide to the Artifacts of Valorim

note: Many of these quests have lots of other goodies and spells 
and things that I either haven't found or haven't bothered to mention. Happy 
Hunting!

note #2: These are really hard quests. I put this guide together 
with a party that's been cheated up to God-strength (255 all attributes, 
full spells, lots of food/gold, every key/map etc.), and it *still* took 17 
days of game-time to get everything! Only attempt these quests if you are 
ready for them!

Krizsan Province, Ring of Endless Magery:

Talk to the 
Strange Wizard in the back room of the inn in Delan, pay his bribe, and he 
tells you about the Ring of Endless Magery.

Now go to Gale, talk to Mrrurr 
in the Sailors' Inn. Buy his skiff and sail to Maddok Isle. Hike south and 
avoid special encounters (unless you like fighting tons of Naga). The Tower 
of Zkal is on the western shore of the island near its southern tip. Go 
there.

The Tower sucks away your spell points, so be sure to bring lamps 
and energy potions and stuff.

The maze is tough, but doable. DO NOT 
dispell bariers unless you like quickfire traps.

Near the NE corner of the 
tower is porcullis. You can open it with a lever hidden in a secret room 
between the gate the corner, but instead go through the secret passage two 
spaces south of the gate. In the swampy room, there's a secret door on the 
north wall. When you get to the NW corner, there's a series of magic 
barriers south of you. Go through the secret door to the south two spaces 
east of them. Now use the teleporter, fight the baddies, walk through the 
magic barrier in the SE corner of the room, and use the secret door on the 
east wall. Ignore the teleporter here. Instead, find the secret door on the 
north wall and use that one. Go west from where you come out, and there's a 
secret door on the north wall of this room. Then go down the stairs.

Due south (down one tunnel) of where the stairs enter the room (and one space 
west), there's a secret passage to a room with a chest containing energy 
potions. Take them (and save them). Now find southern most cavern of this 
level, in one of its northern tunnels is secret door to a teleporter. Use 
it. You'll wind up in a room with 5 teleporters. Use them in the following 
order: NE NE SE NE. From where you wind up, there's a secret door on the 
north wall on its west side. Stand in it, and wait till the falling blocks 
are just above you, then have a spell caster chug a potion, enter combat 
mode, cast group haste, and run to the wall of barriers. walk through the 
barriers to the wall, from the west-most barrier there's a secret door NW. 
Get your whole party lined up in the secret door and in the barriers, then 
end combat and you can "safely" walk through the barriers back to the 
passage.

This next bit is tricky, so saving the game while you stand in the 
secret door is a good idea. Here's what happens: when you walk into the 
passage, the secret door disappears and two falling walls come at you, 
eventually squishing you. So, while still standing in the doorway, chug a 
strong energy potion (you should probably bring some of these with you into 
the tower), and cast force barrier NW and SW of you, so that when you step 
into the passage the walls don't get you. Then, just keep waiting till the 
falling wall to the north turns yellow (starts moving north again), then 
dispel your barrier, follow the wall north, and right before you get pushed 
go NE through the door (its unlocked).

The teleporter to the south sends 
you back to the first teleporter you used on this level. Use this to get out 
when you when you are done.

Go through the door to the north, and then 
fight the hraiths through the door to the east. The runes appear to be 
harmless.

When you go through the door to the north, if you go three spaces 
north of the portcullis to the west the walls close in on you, so go two 
spaces north of the portcullis, drink a potion, and create force barriers N 
and S of you, then go up on the diagonal, let the walls close in, and come 
back to your safe zone. You need to get to the NE corner of this room to hit 
a lever there, then go through the portcullis on the west to fight Zkal. 
Fight the stuff that protects him, then take some punishment while you end 
combat to dispel the barriers that protect him. Kill him, and pull the lever 
in the NW corner. Then get the treasure and boogie on out of there! Oh, by 
the way, killing Zkal spawns an army of undead in the caverns. Sorry.

Isle of Bigail, the Furry Cross Bow.

Talk to Judith, the wandering healer, in 
whatever town you can find her. Ask her about 'artifact' (you learn to do 
this from a beggar in Shayder). Pay her, and she'll tell you about the Furry 
Cross Bow.

It's in the Pit of the Wyrm, due east of Bremerton. However, you 
need to come at in on the north side of the river (not the Bremerton side) 
and do some tricky flying to get to the right spot on the wooded peninsula 
that comes out of the mountains.

Be prepared to fight an army of mutant giants (I counted 23).

Find the stairs to the lower level and go down them. 
Then follow along the passage, keeping the cave wall to your right (when you 
loop around and are heading south, that's left on the screen). You'll be 
battling mung slimes and dark wyrms as you wind through this passage.

In the room with the bodies, there's a secret door to the south of the 
easternmost end of the room. Follow the passage to the mausoleum. Don't 
waste your spell points trying to open the doors, you open them with the 
rune at the south end. Fight the specters and take the goodies in the three 
northern crypts if you want them. Hit the lever is southern crypt.

Go back out to the room with the light. The lever inserted a door on the tomb (the 
building) there. The door is on the west side of the SE corner. Once inside, 
step on the first tiled space to your east, then follow this pattern: N N E 
S E S E E N N then open the door NE

Grab the crossbow and the bolts (some 
are magic, some are trash). Here's how to get out (from the first tiled 
space S of the door): W S W W N W S W (then go to the door SW). Thats 
it!

Bonus Goodies: In the upper level, south of the Giants' Shrine, there's 
a tunnel the dips slightly to the south. At the southern most bit of this 
(just east of the stairs to the lower level), there's a secret passage to 
another tunnel. Go till you get to the wall, shatter it, and move on in. In 
the eastern most room, shatter the north wall at its eastern most point, and 
there's a wand of nullity and a serpent ring in the chest.

Karnold Province, The Black Halberd:

Buy the bourbon at the inn in Sharmik. The 
innkeeper, Quinn, will tell you about a drunken soldier who said something 
about a magic halberd. Then talk to Masok in Angel's Rest, and buy his map. 
Head out to Calloc, then head north forever. Eventually, you'll find a 
little cave ("Remote Cave" or something like that) and just follow the 
direction on the map you bought.

Eventually, you'll fight a bunch of 
rakshas and in the last room (farthest north west) of their barracks, 
there's a secret door on the wall west of the bed. Fight your way to the 
treasure room, and snag your prize. To get out, fight the four drakes where 
the map says "pain!". (Firewalk is helpful here). Also, the kitties have a 
big bookshelf where you'll find Death Arrows and some other spell.

Midori Province, the Hammer Smite:

(I *think* this is the artifact here, if 
there's something else, I couldn't find it)

Kagan, your unspec. services 
contact in Bengaroo, tells you about a hammer called "Smite". (free 
artifact, no bribe!)

It's in the Giants' Forge SE of Lorelei. In the forge, 
hack your way to the far south west, and then firewalk south and east across 
the lava to the treasure chamber. Magic Map might be useful here to show you 
where to go. Both going and in and coming out you'll get nailed by 
fireballs, unavoidable. You'll fight two daemons here, and there's a black 
shade just north of the pedestal. Smite is on the pedestal.

Monoroe Province, Pachtar's Plate:

Do you know how to get into the Gale Library? 
Find the herb-house, and bug the proprietor about "library". She'll sell you 
the key, its worth it! Then find the library. You have to enter City Hall, 
then go west to get onto the battlements that surround the city. When you 
get to the end, there's a secret door to the north, and that gets you into 
the library. The library gives you Antimagic Cloud and Killer Poison 
alchemy, and also tells you about some hero named Pachtar, his slaughter on 
an island east of the Isle of Bigail, and his legendary armor. Back to 
Kneece!

Kneece is where you get the Phoenix Egg to massacre the roaches. 
But now that you've read about Pachtar, if you explore the north end of the 
island, there's a drake lair!

Enter the lair from the west, and try to get 
in. Fun, huh? Well, if you go straight south, turn the corner to the east, 
and walk until you're blocked, you can enter through a secret passage to 
your north.

The hall of pillars is annoying. Go north until you can't, then 
go east a bit, then go north to the lava, then go east to the wall, then go 
north, and you can walk through the two pillars in your way. Now you can 
start heading east.

Fight some efreets, and take some major pain through 
fire walls, ice walls, etc. It sucks. The ice drakes are protected by 
antimagic clouds and pillars, I don't think you can kill them, just rush 
through the center of them so you can fight the fire lizards. See the pile 
of robes and goodies?  Two spaces north of that, protect by barriers, is a 
lever (yes!). Keep heading west, and get ready to fight 5 gorgons!

The next puzzle is north of the gorgons. It involved moving pillars, and it's a real 
pain in the arse. I couldn't possibly tell you how its done, I just keep 
trying and trying until I get it. The idea is that as you move east and 
west, the four levels of pillars open at different points (kind of like 
Elhioc's gate below Castle Troglo). Just keep fussing with it, and 
eventually, you'll get through. The key bit is that at the very center of 
the north wall is the exit (a secret door). When you get there, you go 
through it into a room with a big pit, then along the ledge to the east, and 
through another secret door to a teleporter. The teleporter takes you 
outside (isn't that sweet?). Go down the stairs to the south.

This bit is straight forward. Fight your way through the basilisk swamp and the 
cavern-maze of undead, and eventually get to the drake lords. Kill them, 
then find the armor (to the NW over the lava) on the body. None of his other 
stuff is magical. Now just fight your way back out (remember the teleporter 
to the outside?), and that's it!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

How do I get into the building in New Cotra with no doors?

First, register. Then go to either Sharamik or Lorelei and speak with the blond female agent of Avernum (Sandra) who wanders the streets. Talk with her, and she'll tell you to speak with Commander Johnson. Do so, and he'll tell you what you need to do to enter the building.

What do I do in the Remote Cave?

First, buy drinks and rumors at the Inn in Sharamik. You'll be told to speak with a soldier in Angel's rest. Do so, and be friendly- buy his map. The map is your guide to this level. The first thing you should do is go up to the yellow-white mushrooms and head straight down.

How do I join the thieves guild?

Go to Shayder, and buy some drinks in the inn. You'll get advice on a job. Talk with the man in the inn, and offer to take the job. Carefully deliver the package to Kendra in Lorelei, and you'll be allowed in.

What are those weird stone circles I've come across?

Stone Circle Information

Help! I'm being attacked by a vampire and I don't know what to do.

Go back into Vahkhos's lair, and search the western wall. Go through a series of secret doors, and smash the crystal (guarded by two demons).

What does the Dryad want?

A perfect flower. There are two- one can be found near the ursagi on a long path loaded with gremlins, the other can be found in Zkal's lair. It's your choice which one you want to get first.

How do you get into Blackcrag Fortress?

Join the thieves guild. Buy passage from Geoffrey for 3000 gold and set out to Blackcrag. Go to east of Blackcrag and go down the path. Talk to the innkeeper and press the button. If you don't mind angering the town, there are good items to the east. Cross the bridge and make your way to the portcullis. Kill one doomguard and go through the passage. Voila!

How do you kill Rentar-Irhno?

You don't. You have to find the found ladders down to the lower level and direct all 10 beams into the center of the level by pushing buttons.

Why can't I hit hill giant chiefs?

They have invulnerablity elixers and drink them at the first sign of adventurers. Either get to them before they drink it, or wait a few turns before attacking.

What do I do with the slimes or roaches?

There are adequate guides in the help file provided with the game. Follow them.

Is there a hidden dungeon?

Yes. Bring pants to the final dungeon. In the SW corner are two runes. Put pants on one and walk on the other. Enjoy!

Xian Item Locations and Uses


The Xian items were created by 'X' for the first surface exploration team. When they were killed, the items were scattered across Valorim. Items with an asterisk are useful or interesting.

Pouch - Giant's Cavern with the Barrier Map - leaks effects, often acid

Vest - NE Valorim. Bring 5000 coins - armor with lots of resistances but -2 STR and -5 DEX.

*Ale - Dryad's Grove (SE Valorim) - blesses the carrier every so often. The intoxication is effectively nulled.

*Skull - Ogre Circle in S. Valorim - talks to the carrier

*Slacks - A giant village - heavy pants. +4 luck, -1 STR, DEX, INT. Blocks 1-8 damage.

*Tome - Tower of Magi, last room on the left of the south hallway - cycles through the books available in the game

Shrub - Sharimik Key Items Deposit - sporadically makes plants grow

Chain Mail - SE Upper Golem Factory - typical equippable Xian item. Heavy and with disadvantages

*Coins - Reward from Mother Melamed (Kuper, Isle of Bigail) - you get a few coins every so often

Rock - Hermit's Hut - returning missile; occasionally gives an ordinary rock.

The Filth Factory:

Make sure you received the Phoenix Egg from Purgatos in Kneece. When you enter the filth factory, go north to the top, east as far as you can go, and then south to the bottom of the the room in the NE corner. There should be a door w/ a portal that allows one PC through. Send the PC through, and then fight the monsters. Go to the pedestal and press the button that says 'Deactivate L1 -> L2 Power Conduit'. Quickly rejoin your party and go through the door in the SW corner of the room. Follow the passage and cross the beam channel. Go down a trap door past that.

You're now on the lower level. Go down to the room with barrels and pull the lever. Go up to the lever room and pull the middle lever. There will be an explosion, and you'll be able to use a portal beyond the barrel room. Enter it and make your way to the NE corner. Walk a little west and descend into the center of the level. Go around the circle to the opening of the trash pit in the very center. Be sure to note the staircase to your SW. Enter the circle. When you come to the place where you need to use the Phoenix Egg, go south and pick up the dragon scales. Go back and use the Phoenix Egg. Outrun the quickfire and make your way out, using the staircase.

The Concealed Tunnel:

There is a very simple way to get through this dungeon. Take one of the mirrors that has the face like "/" and push it west to the teleporter room. Place it in a position so that it will energize the last crystal. After stepping through the teleporter, divert the beams with a mirror and walk down the stairs to the crystal. Break the crystal and go back through the teleporter, making your way to the exit.

Stone Circle Information:

Across Valorim you will find mysterious stone circles, similar to Stonehenge in size and appearance. You have the option to pray in them. If you pray in four or five, you will be forced to fight Haakai and mung demons in the endgame, but each stone circle gives you a spell at level three:

1st stone circle: Curing

2nd stone circle: War Blessing

3rd stone circle: Move Mountains + Dexterity

4th stone circle: Divine Fire

5th stone circle: Divine Host

There are stone circle north of the Inn of Blades, north of Storm Port, north of Kuper, on the road from Malloc to Moon, and in NE Valorim.

The Golem Factory:

Before entering: Make sure that your resistances and hardiness are high. Mass Healing level 3 is a lifesaver, but level 2 will do as well.

Immediately proceed to the northeast quadrant. In the center is a staircase leading down. Take it. Go northwest and destroy the two golem-creation machines. Go north from there to the power core.

Press the button on the control panel. The chest has a Restoration Brew and two negative-effect potions. Proceed to the center of the level and destroy that golem machine. Continue going east and destroy the next two golem-creation machines.

Go south and kill the golems there. Go to the northeast corner and press the button, searching the cabinet to pick up an important key. Go back to the first floor and proceed to the northwest quadrant. Go to the center and up the stairs. If you go east and then north, there is a lever. Pull it and head to the southeast corner, where you will find a control panel.

Press the buttons to turn Grid Beta and Grid Alpha off. If you want to be able to destroy spawners on the two levels, press Shielding First and Shielding Second as well. Along the east side, there are a Resistance Mind Crystal and Pants of Power. Return to the first level and then to the basement. Go through to the north spire. Destroy the power crystal and return to the Tower of Shifting Floors.

Go to the second level again. Walk around to the south of the stairway down. Going to the west is faster and safer. Go up the stairway and make your way to the center of the level, going through the south. Again, going west is easier.

Kill the mind crystal using Lightning Spray and one fighter. You can use another fighter to fend off the Jeweled Golems and Divine Fire to take care of the Demon Golems. It's easier to eliminate the golems first. If you want, you can position a laser to hit the Mind Crystal and wait for it to die. Be sure to pick up the Gymnastics and Pathfinder mind crystals. Go back to General Baziron and the Drake Lord for rewards and experience. The weapons saleswoman in Tevrono will teach you Parry after you speak with Baziron.

Tower of Zkal Walkthrough:

Tower of Zkal- the tower is at the southernmost end of the isle of Maddok, which may be reached if you've purchased a boat from the nephil in the inn/bar at Gale. It is a very frustrating place, as your spellcasters will constantly lose spell points as you explore. Once you enter, you'll notice the maze-like structure of this building. Directly to your south you'll find some dead bodies with nothing decent on them, and, a bit further south, an herb garden. Collect them and make energy potions as needed. A bit west of the garden is a vampire (across a pit) and a tomb (with cursed items). The nearby chest has two energy potions (see a theme?).

You can use move mountains in the room with the chest, and two passages will open- one leads to a chest with Rogue's leather and the vampire, the other leads to another tomb to the west with a cursed ring and several monster-making platforms. Enter combat mode and pass the platforms to avoid getting swarmed. You'll also see a gate blocking a pillar that gives Summon Aid 3. Search for secret doors and you'll find a new area to explore. You'll soon come across a platform and two tombs. One contains a suit of cursed plate mail and some graymold, the other has a fire resistant torc.

Continue a bit north and you'll find a room with demon statues. Approach the NE one and you'll be given the option to push a button. This opens the gate to the spell pillar. When you return you are given the option to read the pillar- doing so will drain you twice, but give you the spell on the third time. You'll find some portals, but most of them just send you places you don't really care much about. Now head to the north. You'll find an area with a few skeletons and some mandrake and you'll find another gate even further to the north, again blocking your path.

Fortunately, the lever that opens the gate is hidden slightly to the east- search for secret doors. The region opens out to another closed region, again search for secret doors to proceed. You'll find yourself in an area north of a statue. Explore this region, and you'll be stopped by some barriers to the west. Bring them down, and you can get several energy potions from some chests. Backtrack a bit to the east and enter the portal. The teleporter nearby sends you back to where you just were. Ignore the next two teleporters in this area, and continue east by going through secret doors. You'll find a teleporter after going through two secret doors, use this one. You'll end up in a room with water separating 4 teleporters. Go north and search for secret doors. A horde of undead are guarding a trapdoor down to the next level.

The second floor is much more straight-forward. Clear out all of the directly accessible regions (check for 3 secret passages, one north- energy potions, one south-teleporter, and one SE- dead bodies with lots of decent items). Use the teleporter to get to a rather confusing room with 5 teleporters. The secret is in the splotch on the ground. If you don't want to bother with them go NE NE SE NE. You end up in a room with lasers blocking a hallway. Enter combat to pass them safely. Another set of lasers wait you in the next room, they will turn on as soon as you cross the runes.

Use move mountains to destroy the wall and get some mirrors. Position the mirrors to destroy the lasers to make your exit safer if you so desire. Otherwise, just enter combat. Open the door, this is Zkal's inner sanctum. Several Hraithes are found to the east, kill them. Go to the north, and you'll see another batch of lasers. You may want to grab those mirrors and position them in a way to destroy the lasers- this makes your next job easier. Get past the beams, and pull the lever in the NE. Now head into Zkal's main room. Kill him (he has a spellbook of spray acid 3- two, in fact), and pull the lever. This lets you get into his treasure room. He has the ring of endless magery, a perfect flower, and some humanskin gloves (among others). Leave when finished, the platforms will have turned off.
